The Lastest on La Jolla's Major League Players

Below are two fantastic articles on major league players from La Jolla.  The first article is on Kyle and Bradley Zimmer.  Both played in our La Jolla Youth Baseball league.  The second article is on Tommy Edman who played for his father John Edman at La Jolla Country Day, coached many of our La Jolla kids at the Torrey's Baseball Camps over the years and practices hitting in the off season at our fields with Reggie Smith and Ryan Lehr.

Two for the Show...Baseball's Star-Crossed Zimmer Brothers

craw's corner: Big League Dreams Deferred

August 18, 2019

By Harry Cummins

They were both supposed to be halfway to the Hall of Fame by now, twin comets launched skyward from the seaside Shangri-la of La Jolla, California.

La Jolla was my own private paradise as well, having grown up mere blocks from La Jolla High School, the early proving ground of athletic prowess for the brothers Kyle and Bradley Zimmer.

Playing every sport imaginable, including lacrosse and water polo, the Zimmer boys eventually settled on baseball.  Piggy-backing their prep exploits, the pair would go on to spend a year together playing college baseball for the University of San Francisco.  Kyle, a pitcher, left USF after his Junior year by virtue of his selection as the fifth overall pick in the 2012 MLB draft by the Kansas City Royals.  He received a $3 million signing bonus.

My Cousin Tommy Edman is a Major Leaguer

July 12, 2019

Donnie Kwak

It was A-Rod, of all people, who finally made it feel real to me.

It was June 23, and I was watching ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, Angels vs. Cardinals. Two weeks had passed since my cousin Tommy Edman made his Major League debut, having been called up by St. Louis from Triple-A Memphis.

Cousin Tommy. 24 years old. In the bigs.

My family group chat exploded when we learned Tommy got the call. On June 8, he had his first at-bat, at Wrigley Field, as a ninth-inning pinch hitter. His parents cut a vacation short to fly into Chicago and attend the game on a day’s notice. In New York, on a pirated feed, I watched him strike out, from the left side of the plate, on three pitches. The following week, on June 14, I sat in the bleachers at Citi Field to see Tommy’s first-ever start (at second base) and, batting righty, his first-ever hit (a long double). After the game, I went down to the field to chat with Tommy alongside his parents and his younger sister, Elise. “I think I’m getting sent down next week,” he told me. He was as level-headed as ever, Big-League Tommy. To me, it still didn’t feel real.
