FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: What kind of Equipment does my child need to play in the league?

A: Team Jerseys and caps are provided by the league. You will need baseball pants, sleeves, socks and belts. Managers will let you know what colors, based on the team logos. Each player will need a glove and a pair of cleats. A bat and helmet are optional but recommended. Athletic supporters and cups are strongly encouraged for all male players.

Q: When, where and how often is my team going to play and practice?
A: Each Division varies but most teams will play twice a week (one weekday game and one weekend game). The Shetland Division will play games only on the weekends. Most teams will have one to two practices each week leading up to the season and one practice during the week once the season starts. The manager will choose the days and times of practice. Practice sites will vary for each team depending on field availability. All games are played at the La Jolla Youth Baseball fields located at Cliffridge park.

Q: How are teams chosen?
A: Each child is evaluated at the Player Assessment. Managers and staff draft players with the intention of dividing talent equally. We do try our best to grant requests to play together, but make this priority secondary to a balanced league.

Q: When does the season start and when will I know what team my child is on?
A: Teams will be formed in early February.  Sheltand and Pony will start later in the month.

Q: How long does the season last?
A: Pratices will start in February, with games beginning in March.  All leagues will be over by early-June.

Q: How can I get more information about the rules of the youth game?
A: LJYB plays under the rules of Pony League Baseball. Pony rules can be viewed on the Pony League web site. Division specific rules for LJYB can be reviewed on our web site under the Menu heading League Rules.

Q: What about post season play?
A: LJYB plays in two All-Star tournaments. The Memorial Day tournament is an invitational that runs during the holiday weekend and is played at the Tecolote Youth Baseball fields. The second tournament is a Pony sanctioned tournament that is played in the summer usually around the 4th of July and teams can advance all the way to the Pony League World Series that is played in August. Please refer to Article VI in the By-Laws under the Menu on the web site to review how All-Star teams are selected and the commitments that are required.
